Where the resort sits

Levi is a fell resort in western Finnish Lapland, and Visit Finland places it 180 km north of the Arctic Circle.1 The resort grew up beside Sirkka, a village of Kittilä municipality that has turned into a residential area next to the slopes; Visit Levi calls Sirkka the Kittilä village best known for Levi.5 When people ask where is Levi, Lapland, the honest answer is: on a hill above a lake, in the middle of nowhere, with a town attached.

Kittilä itself is large and thinly settled. It has just over 6,700 inhabitants, ranks as Finland's fourth largest municipality by area, and holds over 700 lakes and 10 fells.6 The resort is the busy corner of a very quiet map, which is exactly why a snowmobile ride from Levi feels remote within minutes of leaving the village.

Getting there is short from the airport and long from anywhere else. Kittilä airport lies 15 km from Levi centre, and by road the resort is 170 km from Rovaniemi and 980 km from Helsinki.47 The map below shows the route north from Rovaniemi, the places around the fell, and the village with its tourist information office.

The fell and the ski resort

The fell gives the resort its name and its shape. Levi rises to 531 m above sea level, and Visit Levi counts 44 slopes and 26 ski lifts on it.2 Visit Finland calls Levi ski resort in Lapland Finland's most popular in winter, from mid-November to mid-May.1 For snowmobilers that matters in one way: the slopes are busy, the trails around them are not.

Visit Levi gives 750,000 visitors a year, an annual average of 111 aurora sightings and an average snow depth of 75 cm.121314 Those three numbers describe the resort well. It is big enough to have every service, snowy enough to ride for months, and far enough north that the night sky is part of the attraction.

From the village the fell looks close, and it is. Most snowmobile rides from Levi stay in the forest, lakes and swamps around it rather than on the fell itself. One three-hour ride may reach the top of a fell if conditions allow, and another heads further out to the fells near Levi.

Levi in numbers for a snowmobiler

Visit Levi lists 886 km of snowmobile tracks around the resort, against 230 km of cross-country ski tracks.3 Its snowmobiling page rounds that to almost 900 km of routes around Levi.18 The Municipality of Kittilä, which builds and maintains the network, gives about 900 km of official routes, plus a track of 18 km from Pulju to Kappera and one of about a kilometre through central Levi.15

The split of work is worth knowing. The municipality builds and maintains the routes, and Oy Levi Ski Resort Ltd grooms them.19 A route officially opens once its first grooming is done, and routes over ice are marked only when the ice is about 20 cm thick.2021 That is why the trail season starts later than the first snow.

The network reaches a long way. Visit Levi notes that an experienced rider can drive from Levi all the way to Sweden and Norway.22 On a guided ride you will see a small corner of it, but the trail signs you pass on the way out of the village are the same ones that lead to the borders.

The winter calendar

Levi's seasons are sharper than most. By Visit Levi's calendar the first snowfall usually arrives during October's second or third week, and the polar night lasts from December into early January.89 January and February bring the deep frost, when Arctic wind makes temperatures of up to minus 30 feel even colder.10 March and April bring spring crust, the hard snow you can walk on.11

Numbers back that up. At mid-January the sun is up for 3.2 hrs and the Kittilä airport station averages a daily low of -17 °C; by mid-March the sun is up for 11.5 hrs and the low is -12.3 °C.16 In mid-December the sun never clears the horizon.16 Our page on temperature and the trail season covers every month.

For Levi, Lapland holidays built around a snowmobile, March is the easy month: long light, deep snow and milder cold. December and January are for those who want the polar night and the best odds of dark skies. Whatever the month, the frost record of Finland belongs to Pokka, a village of Kittilä, at -51.5°C in 1999, so pack for cold.26

How a snowmobile fits into a Levi stay

Visit Finland lists snowmobile safaris alongside reindeer sleigh rides and sled dog tours as the ways to enjoy the area's outdoors.27 Of the three, the snowmobile covers the most ground: in two hours this site's safari takes you through snowy forest and over frozen water, then back to the office in Levi centre.

The resort's layout helps. The Safartica office is in the village centre, and several other operators meet at the tourist information office on Myllyjoentie 2, which Visit Levi keeps open daily.25 You can walk from most hotels to a meeting point, ride for two hours and be back in time for lunch or the slopes.

A snowmobile also suits the evenings. Several rides go out after dark to look for the northern lights, and some stop at a campfire. A day ride and a night ride in the same week show you the same landscape twice, in two very different moods.

Lakes, rivers and quiet villages beyond the slopes

Leave the village by snowmobile and the resort disappears quickly. Visit Finland sums up the surroundings as river valleys and frozen lakes rising to the fells, and that is the order in which a ride usually meets them: forest first, then a lake opening up white and flat, then a long view to a far fell.17 The two-hour safari this site recommends crosses frozen water on maintained tracks.

Kittilä's villages lie scattered along those rivers, and Visit Levi counts over thirty of them across the municipality.28 Some routes run close to them, which gives a ride a glimpse of the Lapland that existed before the ski lifts: wooden houses, smoke from a chimney and nobody on the road.

Wildlife is part of that quieter country. Reindeer graze across the municipality, and Metsähallitus asks every rider not to scare them or make them run, because they are a herder's livelihood.29 On a guided ride the guide stops the line when reindeer stand on the track. Use the pause for a photo, keep your engine quiet, and let the animals choose when to move.

Rules that apply around Levi

The trails around Levi are official routes, and the law follows you onto them. Visit Levi makes a helmet mandatory for drivers and for people in a sleigh, and requires the driver to have a licence.30 Its posted limits are 80 km/h on the river basin, 60 km/h on terrain routes and 30 km/h in village centres and dangerous places.24

The municipality adds its own reminders: stay on the marked routes, follow the traffic rules and signs, and know that the police monitor snowmobile traffic on the official routes.3132 Cycling on the snowmobile trails is not allowed in winter.33 A guided ride takes care of all this for you; a self-drive day makes you responsible for it.

Our pages on the licence rules and on the trail map go into detail. For a first visit the short version is enough: carry your physical driving licence, wear the helmet you are given, and ride where the guide rides.
